Unique 4-story townhouse right in front of a canal. You have a private top floor with double bedroom, bathroom, office, and deck - and use of the large common spaces.
• The bedroom fits 2 people comfortably, the 2nd room works as a private office or child's bedroom, the bathroom is large with a shower, the balcony/deck is spacious and a nice private spot in summer as pictured.
• The house is probably the biggest and tallest in the whole area, with a beautiful view of the water and city.
• The attached video shows the top floor in some detail.
• The townhouse has a huge total floorspace (180 sqm / 1922 sqft) — including an enormous combined play and living room on the second floor with a massive couch and TV, where you'd also be welcome of course.
• It has a spacious modern kitchen — gas, large fridge, two sinks, pantry, garbage disposal, dishwasher, lots of cupboard space, and clothes dryer.
• We have a shared backyard that's really nice to hang out in during the spring and summer — including an outdoor sofa, gas heater and plenty of plants.
The area:
• Situated on an ornamental canal, the house is in a very quiet area with a pedestrian-only square with statue and walkway in front. It overlooks the canal on one side and a green hockey field on the other, and is a few minutes walk away from parks and playgrounds.
• It's a quiet, safe area with a village feel while still being well-connected to central London by tube, overground and bike lanes.
• Transport: Next to the east-west cycling superhighway, 6 minute walk from Wapping station, next to the 100 and D3 bus line, 15 minute walk to Tower Hill
• Shops: A Waitrose 4 minutes away, Sainsbury's 5 minutes away.
• Nearby there are several cute riverside pubs, a Saturday market, and the Wapping Woods which are a lovely place to go walking.
About us:
• We are a family — two professional parents working full-time, one 2-year-old toddler, and another newborn arriving in July.
• One of us is a medical doctor who then did a PhD and went into health policy, the other is an economist and writer.
• We're both Australians permanently migrated to the UK to better pursue our careers.
• We'd probably most like to live with other professional(s).
• Our toddler is a friendly and talkative boy who (this month) likes rockets and paper airplanes.
Who would this be right for:
• An individual; couple; single parent with a young child; or a couple with a young child (if you want to use the smaller room on the top floor as a kid's bedroom rather than office). With another couple and child the house would be at capacity, but we've previously lived happily with another couple and child and are open to that again with the right people.
• People who don't find living with a 2-year-old too bothersome. While we have very rarely been woken up by the children in the house, of course it could happen. And toddlers can be boisterous and noisy sometimes, it's their nature. But you'd have the whole top floor closed off when you want.
• Someone who doesn't mind us having a nanny take care of our toddler in the house on some weekdays and weekends.
Practicalities:
• We would vary the rent down for an individual seeing as an individual uses the shared spaces less than a whole family! £1700 pcm for individual and £1900 for a couple.
* If you're a couple your share of the twice-monthly cleaning, energy, council tax, water, and (1 Gb) broadband would be £400.
• The bedroom can come furnished with a queen bed and chest of drawers, or we can have them removed if you prefer.
• It might be possible to get parking nearby, we actually haven't checked that as we don't have a car ourselves.
• We can provide references from past housemates and colleagues, and we'd look favourably on applicants who can do the same.
Sharing the house:
• By default we'd share basic food and cooking supplies, but otherwise have separate shelves.
• We have a coffee machine, blender, and all usual kitchen utensils which we're happy to share.
* We can negotiate how to best share the big living room space depending on when you'd like to use it and for what.
• We're vegetarian and it's always a bonus to live with other vegetarians.
Non-obvious downsides:
• The top floor can get pretty warm in summer though you can open all the doors and get a nice breeze through it.
• Depending on how much stuff you have and whether you get another chest of drawers the top floor might not fit it all — but there's a huge amount of storage space on the 3rd floor which we can share. There is also a garage with shelves and a loft that has tonnes of storage space.
