Important! Rooms are for postgraduate students only: mature undergraduates can be considered. No couples are accepted for single-room occupancy. These rules are for the sake of houseshare dynamics and council tax reasons.
Fortnightly cleaning of common areas by a professional cleaning company is included in the rent.
All bills are covered. This includes heating, water rates, electricity, fiber-optic internet, TV license, and fortnightly cleaning of common areas. You will not be slapped by any hidden extras.
The house is welcoming: nicely furnished and tastefully decorated, and comes with high-quality furniture. Apart from the stow-away foosball table it hardly looks like a student dig! There is also a brand new dishwasher, which is good to avoid kitchen conflicts. Downstairs bathroom, and a small toilet upstairs. The separation of the dining room and living room ensures plenty of space and even separate gatherings! All bedrooms are on the first floor. A washing machine (no dryer) is on the ground floor.
The house is situated in Bowburn, a short bus ride from Durham. Bowburn is at biking distance from Durham, and being on the bus route between Queen's campus (Stockton) and Durham campus, there is an express bus service (X12) to get you to either campus. The X12 bus, which stops 150m from the house, takes 10 minutes to get to the Durham university library/Palatine center, passing the university sports grounds (Maiden Castle) on the way. A few other local services also operate on the same route, thus increasing frequency (albeit with more stops).
Durham University now has a deal with Arriva (the bus service company) which means you get a day ticket for a quid and a half (GBP 1.50). This could take you all the way to Newcastle if you want!
Free parking is practically always available within 20 meters of the front door and you can be on the A1 motorway within a minute (Durham South junction).
There is a supermarket (Coop) 50 meters up the road, and an NHS medical center can be found within a five-minute walk. There's even a village library! ;)
Rent is 340 pounds a month provided an 11-month contract (or longer) is signed. Shorter-term tenancies can be negotiated (the price will depend on the period, typically 420 pounds per month).
Couples are NOT accepted for single-room occupancy. For tax purposes, the house can be let only to students. There can be no exceptions to these two rules, sorry.
Tenants are liable for council tax (valuation band A, roughly 115 pounds per month for the whole house). Full-time students at Durham University are exempt from paying this.
This is a dog-friendly house, although there are currently none at the property. There is a field nearby where dogs can run freely and there are public footpaths in small forests along abandoned train lines which is great for running (with or without dogs:)).
Other relevant changes made the last 4 years: new heating/hot water boiler system , new fridge/freezer, new dishwasher, new washing machine, upgrade of fiber-optic internet hardware and capacity, renewal of kitchen worktop, hob and sink, new front door and front window, general electric and structural maintenance. In short, things are taken care of!
Thanks for reading to the end. Do get in touch if you are interested. Looking forward to hearing from you!
