Sorry, the “no working from home”is pretty non negotiable, and it doesn’t matter if you insist you never leave your room while working. In some ways I find that even weirder, but I’m old and set in my ways and just prefer to have the flat to myself during the weekday days. I will not throw you out into the rain if it happens on occasion, but this is my one “sticky issue”. I’ve spent my life in hospitality and I don’t want to live in an office. Aside from this I’m pretty chilled and social. I’m also a lefty, LGBTQ+, still confused how TF I got this old, been and done plenty so not phased by anything and I just quite enjoy people in general while also being very happy with my own company.
The place:
Right now I’d describe the decor as “tired”. This doesn’t affect the main living spaces, but the bathroom and hallways really need some love and getting them fixed up will be a priority. THIS is why the rent I’m charging is very low for this area and what the flat and rooms offer (and also because I just hate how rent is crushing people right now). It’s not because I’m weird or desperate to fill them- quite the opposite, so please don’t send me just your number asking me to get in touch, as I’m not an estate agent and I’m not trying to convince you to live here. And please don’t confuse “shabby” with “not clean”.
Let’s talk about Jasmine. She’s a chickenshit disguised in a big bark but is really the smooshiest dog you could ever hope to meet. The first intro she needs to INHALE your shoes and process you on her own terms, but after that she’s just a giant bum that can’t stop wiggling. She would love to play tug with you, but when it comes to snuggling she’s a slobber-free, gentle giant. You don’t need to love dogs but it helps if you like them - either way there’s a big babygate to stop her wandering down the hallway, so you’ll be very “pet free” if you prefer.
The flat is L shaped, with the 2 rooms down one side away from the main living areas.
ROOM 1: 3.5M x 3.5M, south facing, with a comfy Warren Evans mattress. If you have your own mattress- talk to me, because I’m an Otty mattress convert and I’ve been thinking of replacing it. This room shares a wall with the kitchen. I mention this because as a light sleeper this bothers me, but I’ve not had a single lodger ever have issues with it.
ROOM 2: I think it’s 2.6Mx4.5M not including the built in stuff. Roughly the same size but long and skinny. Also south facing and at the end of the hall. The bed is a small double with an OTTY mattress. I had strong ideas about getting a wall mounted headboard but it seems people have different layouts so I abandoned them.
All bills, cleaning supplies AND toilet paper included in the price as I buy all that refillable, plastic-free stuff. You just need your own laundry detergent and buy the occasional dishwashing liquid. Bedding and towel is included if you want, so no need to bring your own but feel free.
WiFi is decent at 150mbps.
The kitchen is a great size, sunny & with a good collection of kitchen gadgets. Everything is there for you to use, including a Nespresso, nutri-bullet, Instant Pot & a Ninja air-fryer/ grill thing.
Bathroom is simple & clean with a very good hot shower & the living room is cosy- can’t think of any more to say beyond the photos.
The terrace is amazing and south facing, with a new and vastly improved gazebo (not the one in the photo) giving an extra room shaded from the sun and protected from the rain, along with a bbq & seating for 6 under an umbrella (not shown).
8 minute walk to Shadwell DLR & Overground or buses are right outside. 1 stop to Bank, or a 10 minute bus takes you to the Aldgates or the 135 goes thru Liverpool Street to Old Street. Whitechapel is about a 15 minute walk. My previous lodgers all used bikes mostly. There’s heaps of Santander ones outside or you’re welcome to stash yours on the terrace.
There’s a brilliant corner shop next door that sells an incredible range of foods or there’s a couple of Tescos and Sainsbury’s all within easy reach.
The George is the lovely local pub, with (sometimes questionable) live music, and quite a few others depending on your tastes. The area is great, there’s a city farm 5 minutes away to pet some goats, lots of parks & beautiful squares, an old church (“the bells of Stepney” from the “oranges & lemons” nursery rhyme). It’s quiet & safe (I used to regularly walk my dogs at 3am in Stepney Green) and all the action of the East End is only a stone’s throw or quick nip on a bike away.
