A double room is available in my recently renovated three-bedroom terraced house in Ashburton, about 10 minutes’ walk from the town centre and within easy reach of Dartmoor. The house has a front and back garden, both of which I’m gradually making more wildlife-friendly.
The rent is £420 per month including bills. This is reduced to reflect an agreed, regular dog-sitting arrangement of around one day per week. This would suit someone who likes dogs and would enjoy spending some time with Pip, my seven-year-old whippet, who is friendly, calm and used to being around the house.
You would be living with me, the owner, and Pip. I’m tidy, fairly quiet, relaxed, and considerate. I’m looking for someone who wants to live in a real shared home rather than simply rent a room in a very separate or hotel-like way. The house is generally calm, but it has the normal busyness and activity of a home: cooking, movement around the house, occasional visitors, and spending time with Pip are part of the set-up.
The room would be your private space. The kitchen, bathroom, living room and garden are shared. The third bedroom is a small office, which I use when working from home and you could also use when i'm not.
This would probably suit someone who is:
Friendly, relaxed and reasonably self-contained.
Comfortable sharing communal spaces and communicating openly about practical things.
Tidy and respectful, without needing the house to feel overly formal.
Interested in settling here for a while, rather than treating it as a very short-term stopgap.
Fond of animals, and genuinely happy with a one-day-a-week dog-care arrangement.
Guests are fine by agreement. I’m happy for either of us to have people round during the day, as long as we check in with each other. Overnight guests can be discussed too, particularly when one of us is away.
I like to keep the house clean and pleasant, but it is very much a living space. I would like the house to feel relaxed, warm and mutually respectful.
One note on food: I eat game, eggs and free-range meat, and I prefer not to have battery-farmed meat or animal products cooked in the house. This does not mean the lodger needs to share my diet, but I would want someone who is comfortable respecting that preference.
